Sevilla-VS-Bayern

Sevilla look to upset German giants Bayern

Sevilla will look to continue punching above their weight in the UEFA Champions League when they host Bayern Munich for the first leg of their quarterfinal tie, set for the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on Tuesday, 3 April 2018, kick-off at 20h45 CAT.

Sevilla stunned English giants Manchester United in the previous round, claiming a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in the return leg to take the tie by the same aggregate score. The introduction of French striker Wissam Ben Yedder was the turning point of the tie, as the attacker netted twice in quick succession after being brought off the bench.

Quite why manager Vincenzo Montella chose to keep Ben Yedder on the bench for so much of the tie against United is a mystery, but hopefully the 27-year-old has done enough to earn a starting spot against Bayern as he looks to add to the 10 goals he has netted in the Champions League this season (including strikes in the preliminary stages).

Bayern, meanwhile, has resembled an unstoppable train under interim coach Jupp Heynckes this season: they are miles ahead in the Bundesliga, safely through to the semifinals of the DFB Pokal (German Cup) and in the Champions League they have racked up six straight wins.

That run includes 5-0 (home) and 3-1 (away) victories over Turkish side Besiktas in the previous round, with the Bavarians enjoying the most comfortable progression into the last eight of any of the quarterfinalists.

They will surely find Sevilla a tougher opponent, but there is no doubt that Bayern starts as strong favourites in this battle – which will be the first-ever meeting of these teams – for a place in the semifinals.
