Tusker look for return to winning form

Kenya Premier League title hopefuls Tusker FC will look for a return to winning form when they host Chemelil Sugar for a round nine clash at the Ruaraka Stadium in Nairobi on Wednesday 23 January 2019, kick-off at 14h00 CAT.

Tusker, who started the season slowly but then racked up four straight wins over Mount Kenya United, KCB, Vihiga United and Sofapaka, have claimed just one point from their last two KPL matches.

The Brewers first suffered a 2-1 loss at home to Mathare United on January 12, before this past weekend brought a goalless away to Ulinzi Stars – a result which saw them drop to fourth place on the log, six points adrift of leaders Mathare United.

Coach Robert Matano would have been bitterly disappointed with the results, especially after welcoming back key player Mike Madoya from injury for the latter game, and he will be urging his team to lift their performance for this important midweek clash.

Chemelil, meanwhile, have also struggled to find consistency. They were beaten 2-1 at home by Leopards last Thursday to suffer a third defeat from their last four Kenya Premier League outings.

Sugar are placed a lowly 14th on the log, just two positions and one point above the relegation playoff spot, and coach Francis Banza will he hoping the chance to make a statement with a win at giants Tusker inspires his players to lift their performance level.

In head-to-head stats, Tusker and Chemelil have met in 20 matches across all competitions since 2009. The Brewers have claimed 10 wins compared to Sugar’s three, while seven matches have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was in the Kenya Premier League in August 2018, in which Tusker claimed a 2-0 home victory. The Nairobi-based club have not lost a home game to Chemelil since 2014.
