Liverpool look for revenge against City

Liverpool will target revenge against Manchester City when the teams meet in the pick of this weekend’s Premier League matches. Their clash kicks off at 18h00 CAT on Sunday, 14 January, 2018.

City memorably announced themselves as title favourites back in September last year when they thrashed the Reds 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium, thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero, Gabriel Jesus and Leroy Sane.

It was a match which turned on the controversial sending off of Liverpool forward Sadio Mane, who tried to control a long ball and saw his right boot catch the face of City goalkeeper Ederson Moraes.

Liverpool come into the match on the back of some superb form: they are on a four-game winning streak which culminated in a 2-1 victory over Everton in the FA Cup last weekend, though the loss of playmaker Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona is a major blow.

City, meanwhile, continue to excel across all four fronts: they await their last 16 tie in the Champions League, are comfortable leaders in the Premier League, advanced through to the next round of the FA Cup after defeating Burnley last weekend, and on Tuesday night they edged Bristol City in the first leg of the League Cup semis to put one foot in the final. Their dream of a ‘quadruple’ of trophies remains very much alive.

In head-to-head stats, Liverpool and City have met in 158 matches across all competitions. The Reds have claimed 74 wins compared to 42 for the Citizens, while 42 games have been drawn.
