United look to bounce back against the Hornets

Manchester United will look for a strong response when they host Watford for a Premier League match at Old Trafford on Saturday, 30 March 2019, kick-off at 17h00 CAT.

United come into the match on the back of successive defeats: 0-2 away to Arsenal in their last Premier League match on March 10, followed by a 1-2 loss away to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup six days later.

It’s the first time that the Red Devils have lost back-to-back matches under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and their response to this adversity (especially as they battle for a place in the top four with the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur) will be a key judging point of the Norwegian’s tenure.

United come into the game placed fifth on the log, three and two points adrift of Spurs and Arsenal in third and fourth respectively. Securing UEFA Champions League football for next season is the key goal for the club between now and the end of the current campaign.

Watford, meanwhile, are in a battle to be the ‘best of the rest’ behind the big six. Javi Gracia’s side come into the match placed eighth, one point behind Wolverhampton in the race for seventh. West Ham United, Leicester City and Everton are also in the mix, but the Hornets and Wolves are generally considered to be the two top contenders in this regard.

Watford’s last outing was a 2-1 win over Crystal Palace in the FA Cup (earning them a place in the semifinals) while their most recent league result was a 3-1 loss away to title-chasing Manchester City.

In head-to-head stats, United and Watford have met in 11 Premier League matches. The Red Devils have dominated the rivalry, claiming 10 wins compared to one for the Hornets. The teams’ last Premier League meeting was at Vicarage Road in September 2018, with United claiming a 2-1 away win thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Chris Smalling.
