Liverpool, Spurs set for crunch clash at Anfield

Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur will meet for a crunch Premier League clash at Anfield on Sunday, 4 February 2018, kick-off at 18h30 CAT.

This is very much a ‘top-four’ showdown, with both teams fighting for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Currently, Liverpool occupy third place on 50 points, but Spurs are just two points back in fifth – with fourth-placed Chelsea sandwiched in between.

The Reds come into the game on the back of a resounding 3-0 away win over Huddersfield Town in midweek. It was a much-needed result for manager Jurgen Klopp and his team, following back-to-back losses at the hands of Swansea (Premier League) and West Bromwich Albion (FA Cup) last week.

Spurs, meanwhile, looked back to their domineering best when they defeated Manchester United 2-0 at Wembley on Wednesday night. The fast-starting Londoners were ahead inside the first minute thanks to Christian Eriksen’s opener, before a Phil Jones own goal added to the score line.

In truth the Lilywhites deserved to win by an even greater margin against an underpar United side, but manager Mauricio Pochettino will warn his charges to expect a more intense challenge when they head to Merseyside this weekend.

In head-to-head stats, Liverpool and Spurs have met in 153 matches across all competitions. The Reds have claimed 70 wins compared to 43 for the Lilywhites, while 40 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a Premier League clash in October 2017 which saw Spurs claim an emphatic 4-1 win at Wembley Stadium, thanks to goals from Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli. That was Tottenham’s first win over Liverpool since November 2012.
