West Ham, Stoke set for relegation six-pointer

EPL-West-Ham-VS-Stoke

West Ham United and Stoke City will meet for a Premier League relegation six-pointer at London Stadium on Monday, 16 April 2018, kick-off at 21h00 CAT.

West Ham come into the match on the back of some fine form: they defeated Southampton 3-0 at home at the end of March before holding outgoing champions Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge last weekend.

The burst of points has pushed David Moyes’ team six clear of the relegation zone and within touching distance of safety, but they have tough games against the likes of Arsenal and the Manchester clubs coming up, making this clash against Stoke a ‘must-win’ if they are to avoid being dragged back down the log.

As for the Potters, the arrival of Paul Lambert as manager has done nothing to halt their slide into peril. A 2-1 loss at home to Tottenham Hotspur this past weekend was a fourth straight defeat and extended their winless run to nine matches. They are placed second from bottom and only the awful form of West Bromwich Albion has kept them from propping up the table.

As the last match of the round, these teams will surely be under even more pressure than usual as they look to respond to the results registered by other relegation battlers such as Southampton, Crystal Palace, Swansea City and Huddersfield Town.

In head-to-head stats, West Ham and Stoke have met in 54 matches across all competitions. The Potters have claimed 23 wins compared to 20 for the Hammers, while 16 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a Premier League clash at the Bet365 Stadium in December 2017 which saw West Ham win 3-0 thanks to goals from Mark Noble, Marko Arnautovic and Diafra Sakho. The result broke an eight-game winless streak in the rivalry for the Hammers.
