Tottenham hope to turn around form in Germany

Dortmund-VS-Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur will hope to turn around their current form when they head to Germany to face Borussia Dortmund in the second leg of their last 16 in the UEFA Champions League. The teams are set to meet at the Westfalenstadion on Tuesday, 5 March 2019, kick-off at 22h00 CAT.

Spurs are well in control of the tie, having claimed a 3-0 win in the first leg in London last month. Goals from Son Heung-Min, Jan Vertonghen and Fernando Llorente saw Mauricio Pochettino’s team rack up one of their best performances in recent memory.

Yet since then the Lilywhites have struggled, losing successive Premier League games to Burnley and Chelsea before being held 1-1 at home by North London rivals Arsenal this past weekend. They will hope a return to European competition sparks them back into life, as they chase what would be only their second ever appearance in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League.

Dortmund have fared little better since the beating in Wembley and this past weekend they went down 2-1 away to Augsburg in the Bundesliga. They previously held a strong lead in the German top flight, but now sit in first place only on goal difference from arch rivals Bayern Munich.

BVB have won eight of the 16 UEFA competition ties in which they lost the first leg away from home, most recently against Benfica in the 2016/17 Champions League last 16 (0-1, 4-0).

The biggest margin they have overturned is a 2-0 setback, which they have managed once in three attempts, defeating Rangers on penalties in the 1999/2000 UEFA Cup third round.

Tottenham have won 16 of the 18 ties in UEFA competition in which they won the home first leg, most recently against Internazionale in the 2012/13 Europa League last 16 (3-0 home, 1-4 after extra time away).

That is one of three ties in which Spurs won 3-0 at home in the first match; they also won all three on aggregate.
