City, Chelsea set for heavyweight battle

Man City VS Chelsea

Premier League heavyweights Manchester City and Chelsea will meet for an eagerly-anticipated battle at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 10 February 2019, kick-off at 18h00 CAT.

Man City come into the weekend’s round of matches on top of the log, having claimed a 2-0 away win over Everton in midweek (thanks to goals from Aymeric Laporte and Gabriel Jesus). The result saw Pep Guardiola’s side draw level with Liverpool on 62 points, and assume first position due to their superior goal difference.

However, the Citizens have now played a game more than the Reds and could find themselves pushed back into second place by the time this match rolls around, as Jurgen Klopp’s side are favoured to reclaim top spot when they host Bournemouth on the Saturday.

Chelsea ran rampant in their last match, handing Huddersfield Town a 5-0 thrashing. New signing Gonzalo Higuain proved his worth with two goals and his presence as the central striker allowed Eden Hazard to return to his more favoured wide attacking role – the result was a far more fluent and cohesive outfit.

However, the Blues have been renowned for inconsistency of late and their last two outings before the Huddersfield game (which were both away from home) ending in resounding defeats at the hands of Arsenal (0-2) and Bournemouth (0-4). Manager Maurizio Sarri will be desperate to see his team show more discipline and fight on the road, especially against a fellow top-six rival.

In head-to-head stats, City and Chelsea have met in 43 Premier League matches. The Blues have claimed 25 wins compared to 11 for the Citizens, while seven games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was a Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge in December 2018 which Chelsea won 2-0, courtesy of goals from N’Golo Kante and David Luiz. The Citizens and the Blues will meet against later this month for the League Cup final at Wembley.
