Gor Mahia look to rub salt into Tusker’s wounds

Gor Mahia will look to rub salt into the wounds of arch rivals Tusker when the teams meet in a final-day clash in the 2018 Kenyan Premier League season. Their match is set for the Moi International Sports Centre in Nairobi on Sunday, 7 October 2018, kick-off at 14h00 CAT.

Tusker come into the match in fine form: their 1-0 win away to Nzoia Sugar last weekend means they have taken 10 points from the last 12 up for grabs. However, they are only fourth on the log, with a haul of 53 points from 33 matches, and the best they can hope for is a third-place finish.

Gor Mahia, by contrast, have already secured the Kenyan Premier League title. It is their second successive championship triumph, and a fifth in the last six seasons, confirming K’Ogalo as the pre-eminent force in the East African country’s football.

Mahia, however, have been in poor form of late. Since a 2-0 home win over AFC Leopards in late August, they have racked up six straight winless games across all competitions. This has seen them exit the CAF Confederation Cup and the Kenyan Shield Cup, while their lead in the league has been reduced (though not to the point that they were under any mathematical threat).

The Nairobi giants were last in league action this past Sunday, when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Mathare United. Mahia will also play a catch-up game on Thursday when they host Zoo Kericho, bringing both them and their opponents level with the rest of the league at 33 games played.

In head-to-head stats, Tusker and Gor Mahia have met in 20 matches since 2009. K’Ogalo have claimed eight wins compared to four for the Brewers, while eight matches have been drawn. The teams’ most recent meeting was a goalless draw in Mahia’s home game back in February 2018.
