Arsenal, United revive classic Premier League rivalry

Arsenal v Manchester United

Arsenal and Manchester United will revive a classic Premier League rivalry when they meet at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, 10 March 2019, kick-off at 18h30 CAT.

Arsenal v Man United has long been regarded as one of the great rivalries in the English game, and while neither club is at the peak of their powers, their clash in London is set to have huge ramifications for their top-four (UEFA Champions League qualification) ambitions.

United’s fantastic run of domestic form under caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued this past weekend when they beat Southampton 3-2 in a thriller at Old Trafford, lifting them into fourth place at the expense of Arsenal, who put up a strong showing in holding North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur 1-1 at Wembley.

One of Solskjaer’s best wins in his tenure thus far came at the Emirates earlier this year when his side defeated Arsenal 3-1 in an FA Cup clash. Repeating the feat will be no easy task, especially with the Red Devils’ spate of injuries, but they will fancy their chances of overrunning the Gunners again.

The hosts will want revenge for that FA Cup defeat and manager Unai Emery needs major scalp to win back some good will from supporters and the board. Fears that Arsenal have stagnated after early progress under the Spaniard may be unfounded in these early stages of his tenure, but a win over United would go a long way in brightening Emery’s prospects.

In head-to-head terms, Arsenal and United have met in 53 Premier League matches. The Red Devils have claimed 24 wins compared to 13 for the Gunners, while 16 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting in the Premier League was at Old Trafford back in December 2018, with the match ending 2-2. United twice fought back from a deficit, with strikes from Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard cancelling out the opener from Shkodran Mustafi and an own goal from Marcos Rojo.
