Frankfurt, Bayern raise the curtain for Germany’s 2018/19 season

Eintracht Frankfurt and Bayern Munich will raise the curtain for Germany’s 2018/19 season when they meet in the DFL Super Cup at the Commerzbank-Arena on Sunday, 12 August 2018, kick-off at 20h30 CAT.

Frankfurt earned their place in the prestigious match thanks to victory over Bayern in the DFB Pokal Cup at the end of last season, while Munich’s dominance of the Bundesliga means they are appearing in a seventh successive DFL Super Cup.

Eintracht completed their pre-season programme last weekend with a 2-1 loss against SPAL, and new coach Adi Hutter will be hoping the challenge of taking on the country’s best team inspires them to greater heights.

The Eagles have been busy in the transfer market, bringing in the likes of Evan N’Dicka, Lucas Torro, Goncalo Peciencia and Carlos Salcedo, while the likes of Marius Wolf, Omar Mascarell and Kevin-Prince Boateng have departed.

Bayern, who poached Frankfurt’s coach Niko Kovac, completed their pre-season work with a 1-0 home win over Manchester United on Sunday evening. The Bundesliga champions are once again favourites for the German top flight and will want to lay down a marker in this game.

The Munich side have been relatively quiet in the transfer market, though the acquisitions of Alphonso Daves and especially Leon Goretzka (on a free transfer from Schalke) look to be very smart business. Their two notable departures were Douglas Costa and Arturo Vidal.

In head-to-head stats, Frankfurt and Bayern have met in 95 matches across all competitions. The Munich side has claimed 52 wins compared to 21 for the Eagles, while 21 games have been drawn.

The teams’ most recent meeting was in the final of the DFB Pokal Cup back in May, with Eintracht claiming a surprise 3-1 win thanks to goals from Ante Rebic (two) and Mijat Gacinovic.
