Chelsea VS West Ham

The Blues finished a disappointing 10th place last season after having won the championships in 2014. It is the first match for new Chelsea coach Antonio Conte and he will be keen to start on a positive note. Conte was busy in the transfer window and is expected to give new signings Michy Batshuayi and N’Golo Kante their debuts. Kurtz Zouma is not expected to start as he is still injured. West Ham’s new signings Andre Ayew and Sofiane Feghouli are expected to start the match. West Ham narrowly failed to qualify for Champions League football last season despite a good run of results and they will be going all out to start well on Monday night. Ahead of Monday’s fixture, the Blues enjoy a good home record against their opponents who has not beaten them in the last ten home matches. Che...

The Kids Are Alright

I grew up watching Manchester United. They had youngsters like Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Paul Scholes and the Neville twins.  These were like gods to a child like me growing up. My father, who was a professional footballer, played for Caps United in the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League. He and his fellow players were burly men with booming voices and rough beards. What astounded me was that these were children compared to my father but they were still winning matches and titles. I’m glad to see that things have changed a lot over the years with more and more clubs willing to blood in new talent. Take sixteen-year-old Reece Oxford for example.  He was outstanding in West Ham’s first match of the season against Arsenal this year. For Slaven Bilic to risk losing the first game of the s...

BPL week 35 review: Leicester remain unbeaten

Leonardo Ulloa pulled Leicester from the jaws of defeat scoring a controversial penalty in injury time as the Foxes drew 2-2 against West Ham on Saturday. The result has kept Leicester’s title race alive as they remain eight points ahead of second-placed Tottenham Hotspurs. But referee Jonathan Moss was a man under siege for his controversial decisions which affected the course of the match during the 90 plus minutes. First, he awarded West Ham a debated penalty with six minutes to go after punishing Wes Morgan for pulling Winston Reid. The decision did not go down well with the home fans who felt it was too harsh as the match was marked with pulling and pushing for a good part yet Moss did not even lift a finger. From the penalty, Andy Caroll scored and two minutes later the Hammers...

FA Cup – Chelsea VS Man City

City manager Manuel Pellegrini looking forward to Wednesday’s Champions League against Dynamo Kiev in Ukraine opted to rest most of his big names. Instead he fielded young midfielders among them Aleix Garcia and Manu Garcia. But even despite fielding an under strength side, City were back into the match ten minutes after Diego Costa had put the Blues ahead when Tosin Adarabioyo scored the equalizer. After that it looked like City would match their opponents but it was not to be as William,Gary Cahill , Eden Hazard and Bertrand Traore scored to put the match beyond doubt. After the win, Chelsea will travel to Everton for the quarter-finals as they seek to make up for their poor form in the league. Away from the results, Pellegrini’s decision to field a weak team will once again raise the qu...

Hammers hammer Liverpool

Angelo Ogbonna’s extra-time header made all the difference as the hammers made it to the next round leaving the Reds in a bad situation. West Ham had gone ahead just before half time when Michail Antonio guided in Enner Valencia’s cross at the far post. The Reds levelled almost immediately after the break when Philippe Coutinho’s low free-kick went under the West Ham backline. With the match headed for a tie and after both sides were denied by the post, Ogbonna made it count for the Hammers as he rose to head home Dimitri Payet’s free kick and with it left the home fans overjoyed. West Ham will play Championship side Blackburn Rovers in the fifth round to be played on February 21. Coming into the match, the Hammers manager Slaven Bilic had expressed his desire to wi...

Week 15 movers and shakers BPL

Stoke VS Manchester City Manchester City’s title hopes floundered following their latest 2-0 loss to Stoke City on Saturday. The loss, the latest in a series of poor results will certainly give fellow title contenders Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool hopes of catching up. But looking into the nitty gritty of the loss, City look to be greatly missing team captain Vincent Kompany. City look to be struggling a lot without the Belgian who is out with an injury and the longer he stays out the more City will continue to struggle at the back. Stoke will take great pride in the performance of Marko Arnautovic who scored a double to sink City at home. The Austrian looked great and could easily have scored a hat-trick had he made use of the chances that came his way. Nonetheless, he wil...
