English Premier League – April 2015 Issue

We are entering the business end of the season and another fascinating climax to the Premier League campaign beckons. Chelsea and Manchester City continue to slug it out and let’s not forget that in addition to those two clubs, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Spurs and Southampton are all targeting a top four finish and entry into the Champions League next season.

In the second half of this month Chelsea have two crucial games, a home fixture against Manchester United followed by a visit to Arsenal. On 12th April all eyes will be on Old Trafford where United take on their bitter local rivals, Manchester City. The last four Manchester derby matches have all gone the way of City and this game is sure to generate huge interest amongst punters. Arsenal, who are juggling their resources with cup football, start the month with a mouth watering clash against Liverpool and let’s not forget Spurs as the bulk of their remaining games are against teams no higher than mid table.

Meanwhile at the wrong end of the table the relegation battle again looks set to go down to the wire. There is always scope for a team to be sucked into the scrap and for one of the clubs who have struggled all season to perform a great escape. As it stands, the owners of Leicester City, Burnley, Queens Park Rangers, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Hull City will be losing plenty of sleep.

Leicester have been in around the bottom three for the bulk of the season but the majority of their remaining matches are home fixtures although a trip to Burnley towards the end of the month is one of a number of “six pointers” where the consequences of defeat can be catastrophic. Sunderland set an example to all struggling sides last season when they put together a sequence of astonishing results against top teams to survive the drop. Sunderland start the month with a derby of their own, a date with Newcastle which is one of the most fiercely contested fixtures on the calendar.
